Tether Gold (XAU₮) has pulled ahead as the leading tokenized gold product by market size after another strong quarter.

Physical gold reserves backing the token climbed 59% from the end of 2025, reaching a record market value of US$3.44 billion by 30th September, 2026.

Customer holdings expanded 73% over the same stretch, even while gold prices swung sharply.

Holders kept accumulating. They added more than nine tonnes of gold-equivalent exposure since January.

That steady buying points to longer-term belief in physical gold rather than short-term price chasing.

The physical inventory itself rose from 520,089 fine troy ounces (about 16.2 tonnes) at year-end 2025 to 827,418 fine troy ounces (roughly 25.7 tonnes).

Tether’s Swiss vaults absorbed 766 additional London Good Delivery bars, lifting the total bar count from 1,291 to 2,057.

The market value of those reserves moved from US$2.25 billion to US$3.44 billion, a 53% gain.

What Do the Latest Q3 2026 Numbers Show?

TG Commodities, S.A. de C.V., the El Salvador-registered issuer, confirmed the following snapshot as of 30th September, 2026 at 11:59 PM UTC:

  • Total physical gold reserves: 827,417.630 fine troy ounces
  • Total XAU₮ tokens in circulation: 827,417.630000
  • Approximate weight: 25.7 metric tonnes
  • Backing ratio: exactly 1:1 (one fine troy ounce per token)
  • Gold price used: US$4,157.41 per ounce
  • Aggregate market value: US$3,439,914,329
  • Tokens already sold: 709,323.66
  • Tokens still available for sale: 118,093.97

The bars sit in Switzerland and meet London Good Delivery standards.

The inventory includes 2,057 standard 12.5-kilogram bars plus smaller one-kilogram and half-kilogram pieces.

Token holders own an undivided interest in specifically allocated bars.

At quarter-end the gold allocated to sold tokens was valued at roughly US$2.95 billion, while gold backing unsold tokens stood near US$491 million.

Why Are Investors Adding XAU₮ Despite Gold-Price Swings?

Gold itself experienced notable volatility through 2026, including a sharp run-up early in the year followed by a pullback.

Yet, XAU₮ demand did not fade. Paolo Ardoino, Tether’s CEO, highlighted the pattern: holders continued to build positions through the swings, demonstrating conviction rather than speculative trading.

He also pointed to World Gold Council estimates that digital gold could unlock as much as US$700 billion in additional demand over time, and he expects XAU₮ to capture a meaningful share of that growth.

How Does Tether Gold Differ From Traditional Gold Ownership?

For centuries, holding physical gold required trusting a bank, vault operator, or dealer. XAU₮ flips that model.

Each token represents one fine troy ounce of allocated gold that can be verified, transferred on-chain, and, under the product’s terms, redeemed for the physical metal.

Quarterly independent testing of a sample of bars adds another layer of verification.

The structure combines the scarcity and historical store-of-value properties of gold with the speed, divisibility, and global transferability of a blockchain token.

Where Does Tether Gold’s “XAU₮” Sit in the Broader Tokenized Asset Landscape?

With US$3.44 billion in physical gold behind it, XAU₮ stands as the largest and most actively used digital gold product.

Its regulated status under El Salvador’s Digital Asset Issuance Law, Swiss custody, strict 1:1 backing, and regular public attestations form a transparency package that many competing products have yet to match.

The growth trajectory also shows rising interest in real-world assets that sit on public blockchains while remaining fully collateralised by tangible commodities.

The latest attestation report and full reserve details are available on Tether’s gold portal.

Market participants watching the intersection of precious metals and digital assets will find the Q3 figures a clear data point: demand for verifiable, liquid, gold-backed tokens continues to expand even when the underlying metal’s price path is uneven.
