Switzerland’s financial regulator has opened a new regulated door for everyday investors as on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, FINMA approved the country’s first retail Spot Bitcoin ETF.

This is a fund that holds Bitcoin directly under Swiss collective investment rules.

The product falls into the category of “other funds for alternative investments” with a specific risk designation.

Previously, Swiss retail investors could only access Bitcoin through exchange-traded products structured as debt securities rather than true investment funds.

FINMA granted an exemption from standard risk-diversification requirements. The regulator pointed to Bitcoin’s long trading history and especially high trading volumes compared with other cryptocurrencies.

At the same time, the authority placed strong emphasis on investor protection.

Supervised institutions must reduce operational and custody risks according to guidance issued in January 2026.

In addition, point-of-sale (PoS) conduct rules under the Financial Services Act apply, requiring clear warnings about volatility, possible total loss of capital, and proper suitability assessments.

Why Did FINMA Approve a Spot Bitcoin ETF Now?

Growing public interest in cryptocurrency investments, particularly Bitcoin, prompted the decision.

Back in 2021, FINMA had already authorised a crypto fund, yet that product remained limited to qualified investors and invested mainly in a basket of digital assets.

The new Spot Bitcoin ETF marks the first time ordinary retail clients can gain direct, fund-based exposure to Bitcoin alone through a FINMA-supervised vehicle.

Notably, several other fund providers have already submitted or announced similar applications, signalling further product development ahead.

How Does This Spot Bitcoin ETF Differ from Existing Swiss Products?

Existing Bitcoin exchange-traded products listed in Switzerland operate under exchange rules as debt instruments.

By contrast, the newly approved Spot Bitcoin ETF sits under Swiss fund law, bringing stricter custody standards, operational-risk controls, and disclosure obligations.

BIT Asset Management AG confirmed it received approval for its Bitcoin Fund ETF (ticker BBIT) and expects the product to begin trading on the SIX Swiss Exchange in November 2026.

The firm describes BBIT as Europe’s only true Spot Bitcoin ETF at present.

What Safeguards Protect Retail Investors in This Exchange-Traded Product?

FINMA stresses that Bitcoin remains highly volatile even inside a regulated fund.

Clear risk warnings must appear in fund documents, and sellers must assess suitability under the Financial Services Act.

Custody and operational risks require specific mitigation measures.

These layers of protection aim to give retail buyers stronger safeguards than direct wallet ownership while still delivering transparent, direct Bitcoin exposure.

Looking deep into the future, the approval strengthens Switzerland’s position as a carefully regulated digital-asset hub.

Retail access via a genuine Spot Bitcoin ETF expands the menu of investment options and may encourage additional issuers to follow.

Stakeholders must monitor November trading volumes and assets under management (AUM) closely to gauge demand.
