Jeonbuk Bank just opened a new door for South Korean businesses. The regional lender, part of JB Financial Group, started offering won-denominated loans backed by Bitcoin.

This marks the first time a bank in the country has accepted Bitcoin as collateral for corporate borrowing.

For now, the product stays limited to businesses that need operating funds.

The bank keeps a careful distance from the digital asset itself. Qualified custodians that meet local standards, including ISMS certification and the Virtual Asset User Protection Act, hold the Bitcoin.

Jeonbuk Bank only handles valuation and the lending decision. It never takes ownership or direct control of the collateral.

Valuation relies on a weighted average of prices from several global exchanges, and the bank has already run stress tests to measure volatility.

How Do Jeonbuk Bank Bitcoin Loans Work?

A corporate client pledges Bitcoin through an approved custodian.

The bank then issues Korean won that the company can use for payroll, suppliers, or other day-to-day operations.

Meanwhile, the Bitcoin stays in professional custody. In addition, the structure isolates the bank from direct crypto-handling risks while still letting companies unlock liquidity from their holdings.

Who Can Access These Bitcoin-Backed Loans?

Only corporate clients qualify at launch. Individuals stay outside the program for now. The bank chose this limited rollout so it can watch real demand and regulatory signals before opening the door wider.

Still, the move already gives businesses a practical way to borrow against Bitcoin without selling it.

What Happens If a Borrower Defaults?

The bank does not seize the Bitcoin. Instead, it follows revised Civil Enforcement Rules that took effect on October 1, 2026.

A court-ordered sale or similar process converts the collateral into cash, and the proceeds repay the loan.

This legal route keeps the process inside existing Korean law rather than inventing new crypto-specific recovery steps.

Why Did Jeonbuk Bank Choose Bitcoin First?

Bitcoin offers the deepest liquidity and the most reliable price discovery among virtual assets.

That makes collateral valuation and potential liquidation simpler than with smaller tokens.

Furthermore, its large market capitalisation reduces the chance of sudden price gaps that could leave the bank under-collateralised.

Will the Service Expand Beyond Corporate Clients?

Jeonbuk Bank says it will review expansion once demand becomes clear and regulations evolve.

Currently, the product remains tightly scoped. Later steps could include more asset types or even retail access, yet those decisions depend on how regulators and the market respond in the months ahead.

In the meantime, the launch places a traditional Korean bank squarely inside the Bitcoin-collateral conversation.

Companies that hold Bitcoin now have a regulated path to working capital without forcing a sale.

The careful custody model and court-based recovery process also show how banks can work with digital assets while staying inside current rules.

Whether other lenders follow will depend on how smoothly the first loans perform.
